African food

1 december 2017 - Accra, Ghana

Fufu
The most common food in Ghana is fufu and banku. Fufu is often made of cassava or a mix of cassava and plantain. It is eaten with a soup, ours often contained fish.

Banku
Banku is made of fermented corn and cassava dough. It tastes a bit sour. First Sara didn’t really like it, but eventually she got used to it! People eat their food with their hands. Even though Sara experienced this at Rachidatou’s house before it was still a bit hard for her to eat with her hands.

Noodles in Ghana
Another, not so African, but still very popular street food dish, is noodles! The brand Indomie is very popular and is advertised everywhere. It is originally from Indonesia, but since 1995 it is also fractured in Nigeria. Thus, we ate this noodle regularly at small street food shops. They make the noodles fresh in front of you, it is a nice experience. Once a woman was so happy that Sara, a white woman, liked her food. She was shouting to everyone that the white women liked her food (‘’Abrony (=white person) likes my food!!’’).

Hot meals in the morning!
It is normal for people in Ghana to eat hot meals in the morning, we were brave and tried it...our stomach did not like that though.

Coconut everywhere
At every corner of the street one can see a man (or woman) selling coconut. We enjoyed the coconut very much, we ate it every day! :)

Fruits on the streets
As most people do not have refrigerators at their homes, it is very common to buy fresh fruit at the streets. They even cut it for you!
