January 1st in Lomé

1 januari 2018 - Lomé, Togo

January the first is a national holiday in Togo. A visit to Lomé beach is a tradition in Lomé. We went to the beach with the whole family and diverse friends and neighbors of the family. Everyone was dressed up very fancy and the beach was so crowded! It seemed like whole Lomé was at the beach. The atmosphere was good and many festivities took place. People organised paid games. For example one should try to break an egg with a stick while being blindfolded and if the person hit the egg he won money.  It was very funny to watch! A celebration in Togo is accompanied by food, therefore the women cooked a lot of food for all of us. They were even so nice to give food to poorer people passing by who did not have any food! It was good to see that wealthier people help the poorer people.

Even though the weather is always good at Lomé beach, you seldom see people swim (most people are not able to). However, Sara likes to swim and she took advantage of the occasion. For the hundreds of people on the beach it was very special to see a woman, but not just a woman, a WHITE (!) woman swim! Everyone was watching Sara while she was in the water. It was funny because everyone was taking pictures and videos as if she was a celebrity. In fact, she did feel like one.
