African clothes

2 januari 2018 - Lomé, Togo

In Ghana and Togo and probably in whole Africa it is very common to design your own clothes. People buy fabrics and take that to a dress maker. The dressmaker measures your sizes and writes down the model you want to have. Clothes are very colourful in Africa, all the fabrics have different patterns and colours on it, really nice to see! We also made some African clothes like the real Africans.

In Togo there are not many washing machines so washing our clothes was sometimes a challenge because we were not used to washing all our clothes with the hand. Luckily we had very kind family who were willing to wash our clothes for/with us! One time we decided to try a washing place where you bring your clothes and they will wash and dry it for you. Sounds like a good solution right!

We brought our clothes in the morning and made an appointment with the woman working there that we would pick up our clothes in the afternoon. We went visiting some of Rachidatou’s family, when we came back it was already evening. We expected the clothes to be ready for a long time since we would pick up the clothes in the afternoon. However, the woman was still not ready! We had to wait for another 30 minutes to an hour before we got our clothes. That was a bummer and not to be repeated!
