Our first day in Ghana

30 november 2017 - Accra, Ghana

The first striking thing in Ghana was the weather. The weather was so hot! We came from 4 degrees in Holland to 30 degrees in Ghana. This was such a difference, it felt like a hot blanket was thrown on you.

We were received very special at the airport. Women were dancing with music in the hall and men were playing the drum (see video). The ambiance was very joyful. First we thought that this happened everyday when people arrived at the airport. However, we later heard that this was not the case. It seems that we were special guests after all!

Rachidatou’s mum’s niece and a good friend of the family who we call uncle came to pick us up. They were very happy to see us. A few guys who work outside the airport were asked by uncle to help us load the suitcases. We gave them a tip afterward.

We called the head nurse who arranged the internship for us and he told us to come visit him right away in the hospital. Something we noticed right away was the traffic! The traffic was so busy and crowded, therefore it took us a very long time to get to the hospital. Sara noticed that no one was hunking, in comparison  to Egypt, where everyone hunks. Shortly after she said it uncle started hunking and shouting in English with an African accent (very amusing).

When we arrived at the hospital we got a tour from the head nurse and made some appointments for the upcoming week. Afterwards we got a mini tour from uncle through the city. We ate something small and bought our Ghanaian sim cards.

When we came home the niece of Rachidatou’s mum made us fried rice with meat. It was very good! After dinner we went outside to walk around in the neighbourhood. We came across a lot of people who greeted the niece of Rachidatou’s mum. One of them was Sam. The niece of Rachidatou’s mum recommended us to go out with him so that he can show us around.
